Isn’t it funny how our tastes change as we grow older? Mr F often tries food he doesn’t like, just in case he has grown to like them. A few years ago, taking his lead, I tried a couple of the capers that came with the glorious vegetarian platter at Pinky Murphey’s in the equally glorious Fowey. And, to my delight, I found that the bazaar balls of bitterness had transformed into little bubbles of piquant perfection!
A year on, and back in Fowey on our annual Cornish holiday, I thought I’d be brave again and try the mini gherkins (cornichons) and, again, my mouth exploded with joy!
Sadly, there is always the exception that proves the rule! The following year, I tried the black olives and all I can say is…yuck! These poisonous little balls of condensed devil’s spit remain revolting and may well stay that way for all of eternity! Mind you…there’s always next year!
